From heaven to earth: the beginnings of portraiture in the Middle Ages

This activity allows participants to understand the early symbolic and abstract uses of the image, which often included a propagandistic function, as well as the introduction of the portrait in sacred paintings.

The evolution of the image through the Romanesque and Gothic paintings of the MNAC will be addressed, illustrating this cultural and symbolic transformation, showing how the image went from a magical and ceremonial character to a more earthly and propagandistic conception.
